quill penIs your organization contemplating a direct mail fundraising campaign? Creating an effective fundraising appeal is easier said than done.

In a recent Grassroots Fundraising Journal article, Peter Schoewe shares secrets to success based on years of testing and experience. He walks you through a simple, yet comprehensive process to create an appeal that will differentiate your campaign from all others.

 

In his opinion, the essential elements are:
A great story
Your letter must convey the passion you have for your cause. It must also tell of the urgent need for the donor to give financial support to that cause.

Personal and specific
The letter must not contain any language that distances you from the individual reading your letter.

Multiple and specific asks
There should be multiple and specific requests for support, both in the letter and on the reply form.

A simple design
Your letter must keep the focus on the story you are telling while making it as easy as possible for the donor to respond.
